The Berlin Farmers Market: Something for Everyone, Inside and Out

For 85 years the Berlin Farmers Market has been a bargain hunters paradise in Camden County, with treasures of all kinds waiting to be found in its aisles of shops and rows and rows of flea market vendors.

The “Mart” as it’s affectionately known, features a bustling indoor market with more than 60 shops and eateries, and it can fit up to 700 vendors outside. The market’s website describes its stated mission, and it’s filled with the exact sentiment we’re trying to highlight in this “Shop Local” issue of our paper.

“Our mission is simple: to connect local farmers and artisans with the community, providing access to fresh, high-quality products while fostering a sense of togetherness,” their website reads. “We believe in the importance of supporting local businesses, promoting sustainable practices, and creating a space where people can come together to celebrate food, art, and community.”

There are so many long-standing businesses operating within the Berlin Farmers Market that it’s hard to choose one standout spot, but we have to highlight Howard and Nan’s Record Shop – store #107.

This shop was founded just a few years after the market opened, in 1945, and it’s gained legendary status in the South Jersey music scene, and for good reason. It’s packed with all kinds of music for every taste, with everything from records, musical instruments and collectibles.

The store’s owner Joe DiPietro passed away late last year, but the store is continuing to operate on a Saturday and Sunday schedule only, so plan accordingly, but we’re just happy to know they’re still going.

Throughout the year, the market hosts several events to enhance the shopping experience. On Fri., Nov. 21 they have a Cruise Night planned. They’ll be participating in Small Business Saturday on Nov. 29, and beginning Dec. 4, they’ll be open everyday through Christmas.
