Our new print issue features “Goodbye Summer, Hello School!” content about the end of the summer season and gearing up for back to school in our communities.
For that reason, we’ve decided to put a strong focus on our Community Spotlight category of “Education.” Schools are truly the backbone of so many communities. So without further ado, let’s shine a light on our teachers, administrators, support staff and parent volunteers who selflessly dedicate themselves to our kids!
Ms. Johnson was nominated by Helen Fort Principal Mr. Aaron Eyler. Here is what he had to say about this outstanding teacher!
Ms. Julie Johnson is a dedicated special education teacher whose passion for inclusive instruction shines through every aspect of her work. Last year, she expanded her impact by teaching 7th and 8th grade writing and co-teaching 8th grade ELA, demonstrating her commitment to ensuring all students can access rigorous, grade-level content. She maintains meticulous data collection systems and integrates technology to monitor student progress and guide instruction. A consistent advocate for student-centered learning, Ms. Johnson also brings empathy and trauma-informed practices to the classroom, helping to build a safe and supportive environment for all learners. Beyond the classroom, she serves as an Anchored 4 Life Advisor and helped launch the school’s inaugural Unified Sports program, enriching the school culture with inclusivity and teamwork.
Ms. Johnson goes above and beyond to create a collaborative, growth-oriented atmosphere at Helen Fort Middle School. Whether participating in PLCs, contributing to the IRST committee, or mentoring students through Unified Sports, she’s consistently a source of innovation and reflection. Her drive to enhance IEP development, apply higher-level questioning techniques, and deepen trauma-informed teaching speaks to her constant pursuit of excellence. Her leadership in launching Unified Sports brought immediate joy and lasting impact to students across all ability levels—proving that her work fosters not just academic success, but schoolwide belonging. She’s not just teaching students; she’s building systems that empower them.
“Ms. Johnson embodies the heart of inclusive education. Her leadership in launching Unified Sports last year didn’t just create a new program—it created a new sense of belonging for so many students. She’s a quiet force whose impact speaks volumes,” said Ms. Kimberly Brucale, Supervisor of Special Education Instruction.
