Our new print issue features “Goodbye Summer, Hello School!” content about the end of the summer season and gearing up for back to school in our communities.
For that reason, we’ve decided to put a strong focus on our Community Spotlight category of “Education.” Schools are truly the backbone of so many communities. So without further ado, let’s shine a light on our teachers, administrators, support staff and parent volunteers who selflessly dedicate themselves to our kids!
Ms. Emily Salowe was nominated by Helen Fort Principal Mr. Aaron Eyler. Here is what he had to say about this outstanding teacher!
Ms. Emily Salowe is a compassionate and highly organized school counselor at Helen Fort Middle School whose dedication to student well-being is unmatched. She supports students across grades with everything from social-emotional counseling to academic and behavioral guidance, often serving as the go-to person for scheduling and crisis support. This year, she expanded her work by revamping the school’s Career Day, introducing all students to Major Clarity, and facilitating small-group counseling sessions on topics like peer conflict and emotional regulation. Ms. Salowe is an integral member of several school-wide committees, including Summer Reading, One Book One School, and the 6th to 7th Grade Transition Team, always bringing a thoughtful, student-centered lens to each initiative. She’s also a leader in professional growth, attending conferences on topics such as multicultural counseling, DEI, and family-school partnerships. Her reliability, warmth, and follow-through make her a trusted support for students, families, and staff alike.
Ms. Salowe should be highlighted for the critical role she plays in creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment at HFMS. Whether she’s helping a student navigate a tough situation, preparing them for high school, or designing a Tier 1 intervention, her care and professionalism shine through. She is a founding force behind the “One Caring Adult” initiative, a powerful mentorship program aimed at supporting students who may otherwise fall through the cracks. Her desire to expand small group counseling offerings—such as a test anxiety group—reflects her proactive approach to addressing student needs. Ms. Salowe is not only respected by students, but by her colleagues, who rely on her for thoughtful insights, follow-up, and collaboration. She exemplifies what it means to be a school counselor who truly makes a difference.
“Ms. Salowe is a quiet powerhouse whose impact is felt in every hallway, classroom, and conversation. Her ability to support students with empathy, strategy, and consistency makes her an essential member of the HFMS family,” said Dr. Jessica Knier, Director of Counseling.
