SOUTH JERSEY BEACH PATROL COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: John Livingstone of the Wildwood Beach Patrol

Our new print issue features our summer “Down the Shore” content about the beach towns, communities, businesses and people that help South Jersey put the state on the map for the best beaches, resorts, events and attractions in the country.

For that reason, we’ve decided to turn our Community Spotlight feature over to the special category of “Beach Patrol” for a while. So without further ado, let’s shine a light on our beaches and those who keep them safe!

John was nominated by Captain Ed Schneider. Here is what John had to say about his life and WBP career.

“At 30 years old, I bring 14 years of lifeguard experience in both New Jersey and Florida. A proud graduate of St. Augustine Prep’s Class of 2013, I rowed crew and was part of a national championship-winning boat in my junior year, which led me to row collegiately at Marist College. After graduating in 2017, I spent a year working and traveling across Australia, followed by six months exploring Southeast Asia.

When I returned to the U.S., I knew my passion remained with lifeguarding. I rejoined Wildwood Beach Patrol for my eighth summer in 2019 before moving to Delray Beach, Florida, where I became a full-time Ocean Rescue EMT. While in Florida, my rowing partner, Justin Cattan, and I earned three consecutive United States Lifesaving Association national championships in the men’s row and completed a row from the Bahamas back to Florida to raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis research.

Now, after five and a half years in Delray, I’m proud to be back with Wildwood Beach Patrol. As a young man, WBP played a key role in shaping who I am today. It’s given me mentors, lifelong friendships, and countless memories. For me, WBP has always been more than a job—it’s about growth, service, and community. It takes teamwork, trust, and the unique skills each member brings to keep the public safe. Every day presents an opportunity to learn, refine skills, and enjoy the Atlantic Ocean. I’m truly grateful for everything WBP has given me and look forward to giving back for years to come.”

Thanks for keeping our beaches safe John!
