Artist Danielle Cartier recently completed restorations to the Ivory Soap Mural adorning the side of her gallery in downtown Millville, just in time for the 2nd Annual High Street Arts Fest.
The mural, which served as an early advertisement for Ivory Soap, was originally painted by hand on the North High Street wall sometime between 1910 and 1920, and was previously restored nearly 30 years ago, back in 1996, according to a news release Cartier issued for the project.
“The mural connects us to our past – to an earlier version of the Millville that was,” Cartier said in the release. “Although we are surrounded by inevitable change and development in our community, Millville’s Ivory Soap mural is (a) clear and visible link to our regional history.”
According to the release, Cartier, who has an extensive background in public art, completed the restoration over a two-week period in August.
Funding for the restoration was provided by the Holly City Development Corporation and the Cumberland County Cultural & Heritage Commission, while the Millville Historical Society assisted with research for the project.
Cartier and her DC Gallery & Studio will also be featured in the High Street Arts Fest, taking place Saturday, September 20 from noon to 3 p.m
Visitors to the festival will be able to take part in art demos by local artists, art exhibits, live music and more at various locations throughout downtown Millville.
