Captain Tom’s Corner: Windy Weather So Far – Hope on the Horizon

Check out our latest fishing report from Captain Tom Daffin and friends!

Well folks, it was bound to happen.

Mother Nature decided that we should stay tied to the dock for the first three days of our long-awaited April tog season. Strong winds and rough seas are on the menu, but it looks like we will get some reprieve after that.

Hopefully the weather stabilizes for us for the remainder of April to get some trips in and put our customers on some big, delicious tog!

The water is warming nicely with 48-49 degrees in front of Cape May inlet letting us know that the tog bite should be good out of the gate.

In other fisheries, striped bass are roaming the back waters and shallow flats from Wildwood to Stone Harbor feeding on grass shrimp, silversides, or whatever else is unlucky enough to get in their way.

There’s been some top-water action, but soft plastics and clam bellies are getting the nod so far.

Hopefully my next report will lead to some happy anglers holding their catches of tog.
Til then,
Tight lines

The weather isn’t quite as bad as it was here, with Capt. Tom Daffin out fishing for tog in a blizzard last winter. But winds have kept anglers from getting out after the black fish so far this season. But there’s hope for better weather reports on the way.

Captain Bob Cope of Full Ahead Sport Fishing had similar news to report.

Well here we are sitting at the dock on the opening day of Tog season.

We are at the mercy of the winds, which don’t seem to want to back off enough for us to go.

It looks like Friday will be our first day to head to the Tog grounds. Hopefully by the next report we will have some positive stories to tell everyone.

Water temps at the dock in Cape May Harbor are rising daily. Yesterday at high water we broke the 50 degree mark so I’m sure it will be game on at the end of the week when we finally get to go.

Don’t get caught not ready to go! It will get going quickly and I’m sure everyone is ready to be back on the water.

There’s not too much to report in South Jersey.

There are a few fish in the back bays and under the bridges, but most anglers are traveling up to the Delaware River to catch stripers.

We haven’t heard of any blackfish reports from the jetty, but it sound like there will be a break in the weather on Friday, so some people will try.
