Captain Tom’s Corner: The Beat Goes On! Time for Big Drum Action in Delaware Bay

Check out our latest fishing report from Captain Tom Daffin and friends!

Hey folks!

We’ve now wrapped up our spring blackfish/tog season here in South Jersey! It was flat-out stellar fishing from beginning to end with quantity and quality fish flying over the rail.

Our biggest for the spring season weighed in at 20.5 pounds. An absolute beast!

Capt. Tom with a 16 pound tog released to spawn and fight another day.

Now we turn our attention to the Delaware Bay and our beloved black drum fishery.

We are very fortunate here in Cape May to be so close to such a niche fishery. Drum congregate in May and June for their spawning run to the oyster, mussel, and razor clam beds of the Delaware Bay each year.

The season has already started off great with boats catching fish early in May. Most of the fish currently are in the 25 to 45 pound range, with some fish over 60 pounds in the mix.

We will start our drum trips on Mother’s Day and will run through the middle of June. We are also looking forward to the start of sea bass season on May 17.

We have availability for both fisheries so give us a call and experience some of the great fishing Cape May has to offer!

Tight lines.

Captain Bob Cope of Full Ahead Sport Fishing is already out there getting after the big drum in the bay, and looking ahead to sea bass season.

Here we are already into May and for us it will be targeting black drum until sea bass season opens on May17, then we’ll be bouncing back and forth between the two.

All I can say is the black drum bite is already underway and it’s really good right out of the gate. Everyone on our trips have been catching fish, mostly in the 20 to 30 pound class, but we manage to get one large one pushing 50 pounds on each trip.

Getting bait has been the hard part. You have to order it ahead of time or your not going. With the prices so high, nobody is carrying any extra bait.

The fishing is good now. Don’t wait!
