Captain Tom’s Corner: Another Potential Tog Record for Fishin’ Fever in Cape May

Check out our latest fishing report from Captain Tom Daffin and friends!

Hey folks!

Good things happening here in Cape May. The weather hasn’t been the best but we’re getting some trips in when the wind and seas aren’t too, too bad.

Tog fishing is good with limits caught on all but one trip we’ve had so far and jumbo tog coming over the rail. On many trips we are even releasing many keepers after our crew have caught their legal limits.

One recent trip saw several big fish being released with fish weighing 10, 12, 16.5, and 20.5 pounds!

Eric Andersen of Connecticut aboard the Fishin’ Fever with his catch, a pending IGFA record-setting tautog.

Congratulations are in order for Eric Andersen of Connecticut on the new pending IGFA length release record for tautog. The fish he caught with us was 20.5lbs and measured 78cm (31”).

Potential IGFA record length tautog.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This isn’t the first record-setting tog caught aboard Capt. Tom’s boat. In 2020, a fisherman on Fishin’ Fever brought in a New Jersey state record tog weighing in at 25.8 pounds. The previous state record that the 2020 fish bested was caught in 2015, also on Daffin’s Fishin’ Fever!

We are also seeing many big seabass on these trips. Unfortunately that season doesn’t open until May 17, but it bodes well for a productive spring seabass season.

Also, I’ve heard of the first couple of black drum caught from the surf on fresh surf clams. Can’t wait for drum season!

If you haven’t experienced this fishery, contact us and we can get you on a trip where you’re catching 30-80 pound fish just minutes from the marina.

But before that, we still have a couple weeks of tog season to get in!

Tight lines.
