White House Sub Shop – 80 Years of Stellar Sandwiches in Atlantic City

The hoagie or submarine sandwich may not be a South Jersey creation in and of itself, but if you’re looking for one of the best examples of the genre anywhere in the world, you should make it a point to visit Arctic Avenue in Atlantic City, where the White House Sub Shop has been doing it right for going on eight decades.

The menu is almost exclusively subs here, and why shouldn’t it be? It’s what they do best. Italian subs, cheesesteaks, meatball sandwiches – all made with high quality ingredients and always perfect locally-baked bread.

Just visiting the shop is an event and if you want the full experience, try to get a spot at the old school lunch counter, where you can watch your order being prepared in front of you, and the waitress will probably call you hon. The service is fast and the place is always crackling with energy.

Founded in 1946, it’s retained that old school, no frills vibe that just can’t be faked. Like the bread, its mystique has been baked in locally for generations. The kind of place enjoyed by locals, tourists and Atlantic City’s visiting celebs in equal measure, its walls are covered in framed photos and autographs. Even the Beatles ate here, when they played AC back in 1964.

But all that lore still takes a back seat to the main attraction – the food.

So if you’re visiting Atlantic City, it’s a must visit, and even if you’re not already going to be in town for anything else, it’s worth a trip for the subs alone.
