SOUTH JERSEY BEACH PATROL COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: Chief Steve Stocks of the Wildwood Beach Patrol

Right now we’re working on our next print issue, which will feature our summer “Down the Shore” content about the beach towns, communities, businesses and people that help South Jersey put the state on the map for the best beaches, resorts, events and attractions in the country.

For that reason, we’ve decided to turn our Community Spotlight feature over to the special category of “Beach Patrol” for a while. So without further ado, let’s shine a light on our beaches and those who keep them safe!

Steve was submitted to us by Captain Ed Schneider.

Steve has proudly dedicated 40 consecutive summers to the Wildwood Beach Patrol. He has served as Chief for the last 14 years.

Steve recently retired from his career as an educator with the Philadelphia School District and he and his wife Kim have made Wildwood Crest their full time home.

One of the things Chief Stocks is most proud of is that he spearheaded Wildwood Beach Patrol’s collaborative training with local police, fire and EMS. He feels that these programs have significantly improved ocean rescue preparedness during times when lifeguards are not present.

“To date, we’ve certified thousands of non-lifeguard first responders in operational ocean rescue — a milestone that continues to strengthen community safety,” Stocks said.

Chief Stocks is also very proud of leading his team to victory at the 2017 Cape May County Lifeguard Championships.

Stocks went on to say, “On a more personal note, having the opportunity to work alongside our 18-year-old son Cole, now in his third year as a lifeguard, has been a truly rewarding and meaningful experience.”
